The airline SKYhigh Dominicana inaugurated a new route yesterday, Tuesday, with a daily flight between the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico and the Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
"This new flight strengthens Puerto Rico's profile as an air access hub in the Caribbean, increases the flight network between Caribbean destinations, and makes both destinations even more attractive and accessible," said Carlos Mercado, director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, in a statement.
The Minister of Tourism also emphasized that this is the airline's second direct route, following the launch of the Santo Domingo–Aguadilla route, a municipality in western Puerto Rico, at the beginning of October
"The routes between the international airports of Santo Domingo, San Juan, and Aguadilla are a product of our shared vision to encourage the development of new travel options and offers for those interested in enjoying the benefits and excellent service for which we are known internationally," Mercado added.
In this context, he highlighted that SKYhigh's flights between San Juan and Santo Domingo will have an estimated direct impact of $5.9 million, raising the total annual contribution of the airline's operations to the air travel sector to $7.4 million.
The flights from San Juan and Aguadilla will generate approximately 40,439 additional seats to the current inventory.
For her part, Cesarina Beauchamp, executive vice president of SKYhigh Dominicana, indicated that this flight "is not just a new service, but a door that opens to new growth opportunities for tourism and trade" between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
On the other hand, Aerostar's president, Jorge Hernández, stated that the Dominican Republic is the preferred destination for Puerto Rican passengers.
