Real estate and construction activities reported more than 4,000 workplace accidents last year, says IDOPPRIL

SANTO DOMINGO.-From the construction and real estate sectors, IDOPPRIL, the Dominican Institute for Prevention and Protection of Occupational Risks, received 4,485 notifications of accidents during work hours during the past year, reported Fausto López Solís, executive director of the entity.

According to the report from the protective agency, those linked to real estate activities reported 2,586 cases; while construction registered 1,899. The total number of cases presented amounts to 49,595 notifications of employees injured in the performance of their duties during 2022.

According to a press release from the institution, the Collective, Social and Personal Services submitted 1,601 reports.

López Solis detailed that 44,779 reports corresponded to work accidents (AT) and 4,822 to occupational diseases (EP).

He said that of these reported cases, a total of 21,895 belong to workers in the National District, 15,944 to the Northern Region; 8,606 to the Eastern provinces; and 3,150 occurred in the Southern Region of the country.

The official specified that 37,448 of the work accidents reported from January 1 to December 31, 2022, corresponded to the private sector; while among public employees, 12,147 cases were registered.

“The largest number of reports of workers who suffered work accidents (AT) or occupational diseases (EP) fell on the male gender with 30,044 cases; while the remaining 19,551 corresponded to the female gender,” explained López Solís.

He stated that workers aged between 20 and 29 years old generated 16,256 reports of workplace accidents; those aged 30 to 39 produced 15,489; those aged 40 to 49 were 9,689; those over 60 years old 2,319, while the lowest number of reports corresponded to employees under 20 years of age, with 163 cases reported, during the year 2022.

Dr. López Solís stated that the group with the highest reported AT and EP was the Manufacturing Industry, that is, the manufacture of food products, beverages, textiles and footwear, among others, with 10,535; followed by the Trade and Automotive Vehicle Parts with 8,047; and in third place was Health and Social Services with 7,701.

In addition, the Accommodation and Food sector reported 6,376 workplace accidents during the period indicated, while Education ranked fifth, with 3,102 notifications.

López Solís indicated that in the Public Administration, Defense and Security there were 2,388 accidents at work or occupational diseases and in the Transportation, Storage and Communications sector 2,023.
