SANTO DOMINGO- Banco Popular Dominicano, as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, announced the opening of 60 scholarships for deserving students from low-income families to pursue higher and technical studies in 32 different majors at 11 universities, within its Popular Excellence scholarship program.
This is the most comprehensive scholarship program in the Dominican Republic's financial sector and reflects Banco Popular's commitment to human development and social progress, central elements in its sustainable vision and responsible banking practices, according to a press release.
The bank states that in the last decade it has allocated more than RD$200 million for the development of this initiative that promotes quality education and opens up opportunities for youth employment.
Currently, Excelencia Popular has 290 active scholarship recipients and 300 graduates, of whom 80% are employed, thus demonstrating the high employability rate of the initiative.
Positive impact with 60 new scholarships
Christopher Paniagua, CEO of Banco Popular, stated that with Excelencia Popular the bank “fulfills its mission to be a leading company that drives significant changes and generates a positive and sustainable impact on our society.”.
“At Banco Popular Dominicano, we know that education is the cornerstone upon which we build our future as individuals. It is the key for the Dominican Republic to overcome its current and future challenges,” the executive said.
How to apply for a Popular Excellence scholarship
Young people interested in applying for the scholarship should visit the website Popularenlinea.com/excelenciapopular and complete a form, which they must submit to the educational institution where they have been admitted. Each institution will evaluate and select candidates for the Excelencia Popular scholarships.
Each university has a specific number of places and programs available. Scholarships are exclusively for young people who wish to begin their higher education.
What does the scholarship program offer?
The scholarship program offers full tuition coverage, along with complementary training in areas such as leadership, personal development, financial education, digital culture, social skills, and entrepreneurship, among others.
In addition, Popular provides each scholarship recipient with a computer to facilitate their studies, offers personalized follow-up, and recognizes outstanding graduates upon completion of their studies, rewarding them with a special bonus to continue their education.
A total of 22 educational institutions are allies of the Popular Excellence program, with the Catholic University of Santo Domingo (UCSD) joining this year.
The educational organizations with scholarships available in this 2024 call are the Ibero-American University (UNIBE), Technological Institute of Santo Domingo, National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), Dominican University O&M, the International School of Art and Design Chavón, the Catholic University Nordestana (UCNE), ISA University, the Specialized Institute of Higher Studies Loyola (IEESL), the Central University of the East (UCE), the Utesa Santiago University (UTESA) and the UCSD.
