SANTO DOMINGO. – Banco Popular Dominicano climbed 44 positions in a single year in The Banker magazine's list of the 1,000 best banks in the world, reaching number 739 and maintaining its position as the leading Dominican bank in this ranking, with an increased lead of 31 places over its closest local competitor.
The bank has continuously improved its ranking in this international list, achieving a rise of 68 positions in the last five years in this evaluation that has been carried out for more than four decades by The Banker, owned by the Financial Times group.
According to the financial publication, for the 2023 results, the financial statements of 2,000 banks from 101 countries were analyzed, with the main evaluation criterion being the state of the financial strength of the primary capital, in English Tier 1 capital, a measure that indicates the bank's ability to support its clients.
Tier 1 capital increase
The Banker magazine raised the Tier 1 capital requirement to US$557 million this year for inclusion in its list of the 1,000 best banks. At the time of the evaluation, Banco Popular had over US$1.193 billion in its primary capital and a solvency ratio exceeding 15%.
