SANTO DOMINGO- 1,513,509 passengers traveled through national airports during the past month of July in some 10,565 air operations according to data provided by the president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), José Ernesto Marte Piantini.
Marte Piantini explained that of these, 776,493 were inbound flights and 737,016 were outbound flights.
This figure surpasses that of 2019 when 1,311,823 passengers were transported through Dominican terminals.
He highlighted that the Punta Cana and Las Américas airports set record numbers. Punta Cana achieved a record passenger traffic figure for any month and any airport, while Las Américas surpassed its previous record set in July 2021.
“Regarding the Puerto Plata airport, it is important to highlight that it has recovered 97% of the passenger traffic figures it registered in 2019,” he said.
In July 2022, 120 airlines operated commercial flights in the Dominican Republic, of which 45 were scheduled flights and 75 were charter flights. These operations covered 229 air routes, 117 of which were scheduled flights and 112 were charter flights.
As usual, the three busiest routes in July 2022 were New York John F. Kennedy Airport, Miami, and Newark, with a combined total of 525,563 passengers. This figure represents 35% of the country's total air traffic.
Madrid, Spain and in the United States: Miami, Tocumen, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando broke passenger traffic records to/from the Dominican Republic in July 2022, for any month.
More than 800,000 passengers traveled through Punta Cana International Airport in July
During the months of June and July of this year, the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) achieved a record number of passengers with a figure of 1,522,501, passengers who entered and left the national territory from 28 countries in Asia, Europe, North America and the Caribbean.
A report recently published by the Ministry of Tourism indicates that 414,735 passengers entered the country through the PUJ during the month of July and 402,502 left for a total of 817,237; while in June, 358,483 arrived and 346,781 left, for a total of 705,264 passengers.
July 2022 has been the month with the highest movement and transit of passengers through the Punta Cana International Airport in recent years with 188,192 passengers above the year 2019.
The report also indicates that so far this year, 4,942,244 passengers have passed through Punta Cana International Airport. This includes 2,446,939 arriving passengers and 2,495,305 departing passengers. Of these, the United States market accounted for 45%, with 2,206,317 passengers; Canada for 13%, with 644,192 passengers; and Panama for 7%, with 334,193 passengers.
They are followed by France (267,047), Colombia (262,295), Germany (222,387), England (180,118), Spain (161,296), Peru (113,644), Puerto Rico (109,079) and Russia (90,409), the latter market referring to figures prior to the suspension of flights from Russia to the country.
The new flight frequencies have been key to the increase in passengers, with routes from Colombia standing out, contributing 292,295 passengers, 5% of the total, well above traditional markets such as Germany, Spain and England.
A great month for the country
The Dominican Republic achieved its best month ever for tourist arrivals in July, receiving 735,064 non-resident visitors, surpassing December 2021, according to statements by the Minister of Tourism, David Collado.
