SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), through the Directorate of Social and Community Programs, has begun work to replace the zinc roofs of more than 500 homes of low-income families in the municipality of Los Alcarrizos, Santo Domingo province.
Yasmina Veras, director of Social Programs, explained that they are working on replacing roofs on homes located from the Blanco bridge to the Savica sector, covering a social debt that the sector has had for decades.
Veras said that the MOPC, in agreement with the Mayor's Office of Los Alcarrizos, carried out a survey of 500 homes in vulnerable situations, but in the first stage 200 that are in more precarious situations will be repaired.
He added that apart from the new zinc roofing, a comprehensive medical operation was included, encompassing 14 specialties, as well as water distribution, fumigation, disinfection, cleaning brigades, and street paving and pothole repair.

He indicated that the operation carried out by the MOPC's Social Programs took place in the Capotillo sector, and that it will be taken to other communities, "since the idea is to continue with this type of action.".
“When it starts to get cloudy, and it’s going to rain, it’s torture; it affects them a lot. You can see the condition of those roofs. This roof replacement operation will continue, and we’ll keep moving them to the areas that need it most,” he said.
Julio Lorenzo Pulinario said he feels grateful to God, President Abinader, and Minister Deligne Ascención for bringing solutions to the families of the municipality of Los Alcarrizos.
“The residents of Los Alcarrizos are grateful, because the repairs being done to the houses were really needed, as it is a very significant help for all of us,” he explained.
Reina Suárez, who benefited from the roof replacement on her home, expressed her gratitude for the improved appearance of her house. “I am very happy, I feel very good and content because the zinc roof was ugly and now I will have a new, beautiful zinc roof, and my house is much nicer,” she said.
Freddy Antonio Rodríguez explained that the zinc roof of his house was in precarious condition, and he was already worried as soon as it started getting cloudy.
“I am very grateful to the MOPC guys, who came to me and helped me as soon as they saw me, since my physical condition does not allow me to defend myself much, and through them and the Ministry of Public Works they are making sure that my house is like new,” he said.
