Minister of the Presidency oversees progress on construction of Cabo Rojo International Airport

Construction work on the Cabo Rojo Airport is progressing. Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza visited the facilities yesterday, Thursday, May 21, to monitor the progress of the project located in Pedernales, which represents one of the current government's most ambitious initiatives.

During a tour accompanied by the executive director of the Airport Department (DA), Víctor Pichardo; the Minister of Public Administration (MAP) and director of the Pro-Pedernales Trust, Sigmund Freund; the head of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Igor Rodríguez, other officials from the sector and authorities of the province; Paliza praised the pace and coordination that the work exhibits.

“It must be said that this project is planned for February (of next year); and it can receive the first aircraft in an operation that is growing, as demand requires,” said Paliza.

He indicated that it is also expected that hotels will open in the Cabo Rojo area during the course of next year, 2027, "so that this whole great project can be comprehensively outlined," he explained.

Meanwhile, Víctor Pichardo, director of the DA, praised the progress in infrastructure such as the runway, which is in the paving stage; the airfield, the control tower and other complementary infrastructure works, and its development according to plan.

“All of this guarantees that the airport project will be operational starting in February of next year,” Pichardo stated, adding that the institution he leads has dedicated all its efforts to its progress, so that President Luis Abinader can announce its operations at the beginning of 2027.

Technical advance

Prior to the tour, airport authorities held a meeting with the project's technical contractors at the DA Coordinating Office, where they received general explanations about the progress of each intervention on the ground.

The topics discussed included work on the airfield, runway, taxiway area, drainage, terminal building, as well as some pending issues due to rain.

The Cabo Rojo International Airport is part of the Pro-Pedernales tourism project, which aims to provide an economic and tourism boost to the southern region of the country.
