The announcement of new investments consolidates the expansion of this area and places it on the route of the most exclusive destinations in the country with a projection of 3,000 rooms by 2026.

SANTO DOMINGO– Nestled on the eastern coastal plain of the Dominican Republic, it commands its own rhythm, facing the Atlantic and sheltered behind verdant hills and the imposing Redonda Mountain. With nearly 40 kilometers of coastline boasting white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, lagoons like Limón and Redonda, and an Emerald Coast rich in flora and fauna, this natural enclave has captured the attention of investors and the Ministry of Tourism, driving its transformation into a luxury destination focused on sustainable development.

Local tourism began to discover the area's charms, culminating in the 2019 opening of Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda, a pioneer in transforming Miches into a major tourist destination. Prior to this, hostels, small hotels, and Airbnb-type accommodations already existed. Then, in 2021, the State and the El Seibo-Miches Hotel and Tourism Association (Promiches) signed a public-private partnership agreement to develop the region in an orderly and sustainable manner.

Thus, the Public-Private Management Board of Playa Esmeralda was formed, in which the Ministry of Environment, the Dominican Navy, the Tourism Police (Politur), the El Cedro District Board and the Association of Artisans of Miches (ARTEMI) participate.

In 2024, the Board designed the Emerald Beach Management and Conservation Plan, which includes five essential components:

• Protection of reefs and seagrass meadows

• Conservation of dunes and coastal vegetation

• Sea turtle care

• Orderly inclusion of local communities

• Responsible solid waste management

This plan is proposed as a replicable model for the entire region, guaranteeing proper and sustainable development with a significant socioeconomic impact. Hato Mayor, with a population of 17,000 and one of the highest poverty rates in the country, will benefit from the creation of 3,500 direct jobs over the next 18 months, resulting from an investment of more than one billion dollars in projects linked to Promiches.

Programs like Opportunity 1424, in partnership with the Armed Forces Vocational School, Infotep, and various local institutions, train people of working age to join hotel teams. Additionally, efforts have been made to organize local offerings, such as the legalization and training of artisans who collaborate with hotels like Viva Miches by Wyndham, and weekly fairs that promote regional art and culture.

“The socioeconomic inclusion of local communities is not achieved by inertia and requires support. We are creating spaces for comprehensive training in Miches and have added the Technical Training School of El Seibo and Sabana de la Mar, bringing the impact of this initiative to other locations,” says Gustavo Román, executive director of Promiches.

The Tropicalia Foundation promotes entrepreneurship initiatives with projects such as ¡Miches, Sí! and Miches Emprende, and the ambitious master plan “Aldea Miches” is envisioned, which covers 133 hectares to develop a comprehensive hotel and tourism complex with green infrastructure and ecological concepts.

Significant progress has been made in infrastructure: from the 2015 inauguration of the Uvero Alto-Miches-Sabana de la Mar highway and the 2019 construction of the Fernando Rainieri Boulevard, to the development of public access to Playa Esmeralda, which now features parking, security, showers, restrooms, and an artisan market. The Miches-Hotel Zone aqueduct, with a capacity of 300 liters of water per second and a 1.9 million gallon reservoir, supplies both the community and the hotel industry, drawing water from the Yeguada, Jovero, and Santiago rivers.

The language of money is expressed in the trust placed in banks, both local and international. Banreservas is financing 54% of the 3,756 rooms under construction, while the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has granted US$134.6 million for the Four Seasons Resort and Residences, part of the Tropicalia project.

The combined total of capital amounts to approximately US$1.66 billion, distributed among local contributions from the Punta Cana Group: US$100 million; Grupo Del Valle: US$150 million; Promiches: US$500 million; Grupo Oasis: US$100 million; Zemi Hotel & Residences: US$60 million, as well as foreign contributions from Temptation Hotels & Resorts: US$150 million; Club Med: US$100 million; Four Seasons: US$250 million; Accor Hotels: US$100-150 million.

In addition, Marriott has announced a US$215 million investment to transform the Sunrise Miches Beach Resort into the Marriott Miches Beach, All-Inclusive Resort, scheduled for 2025. Other banks, such as Banco Popular Dominicano, Banco López de Haro, Banco BDI, DEG, ILX Management, CIFI, and National Cooperative Bank, are also actively involved in financing hotel projects.

This influx of investment generates thousands of jobs, boosts local businesses such as restaurants, markets and tour operators, and promotes urban development by improving infrastructure.

At the same time, the tourism boom has driven up real estate demand, fostering the construction of vacation homes, villas, exclusive condominiums, and eco-community projects that prioritize sustainability. The proliferation of accommodations on short-term rental platforms diversifies the offerings and attracts both domestic and international buyers, always under a commitment to preserving the natural environment.

With ongoing investments in infrastructure, tourism, and real estate development, Miches is poised to become one of the most exclusive destinations and a model of development in the Caribbean. Its breathtaking natural beauty, combined with the synergy between private capital and government support, promises to transform the region into a key driver of the Dominican economy, while prioritizing environmental sustainability, community inclusion, and the strengthening of basic services and access—a vision that embodies luxury, authenticity, and respect for the environment.
