As of October 2025, the loan portfolio for home acquisition had a balance of RD$289,648.2 million and the one for the construction of housing units totaled RD$136,110.6 million.
SANTO DOMINGO– Loans from multiple banks for the acquisition and construction of homes tripled during the period 2017-2025, highlighting the role played by the banking sector in facilitating the development of the mortgage market by channeling resources to satisfy both housing supply and demand, noted the Association of Multiple Banks of the Dominican Republic (ABA).
The entity explained that financing for home acquisition increased from RD$114,869.3 million in December 2017 to RD$289,648.2 million in October 2025, with an absolute increase of RD$174,778.9 million and a relative growth of 152.2% during that period.
He noted that, within financing to the private sector, this item ranks third, surpassed only by consumer loans and those intended for wholesale and retail trade.
The Association highlighted the 147.6% growth in construction financing during that period, which meant an increase of RD$81,146.4 million in absolute terms, going from RD$54,964.2 million in the portfolio in December 2017 to RD$136,110.6 million in October 2025.
The association representing multiple banks highlighted that the construction industry is a key sectorin the Dominican economy not only for its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product, but also for its interconnection with other productive sectors, which generates a multiplier effect in the Dominican economy.
"The upturn in financing for home acquisition and construction has contributed to the revitalization of the sector, the reduction of the country's housing deficit, as well as the creation of employment, not only directly but also indirectly, since for each direct job the construction sector indirectly impacts the generation of jobs in all the activities from which it demands products and services," the ABA stated.
In that order, he indicated that, with the channeling of these resources, multiple banking supports an industry that, according to information from the 2023 National Survey of Economic Activity, registered a total of 53,325 employees and a projection of reaching 55,374 positions this year.
"The banking sector reaffirms its commitment to continue expanding and facilitating access to credit for the construction sector (on the supply side) and for home purchases (on the demand side), supporting projects that boost the economy and strengthen the opportunities for Dominican households to acquire a decent roof, adapted to their resources and needs," the ABA stated in a press release.
