Licenses for private construction registered a year-on-year reduction of 11.9% at the close of October-December 2023, highlights the ONE

SANTO DOMINGO.- Licenses granted to the private sector for the construction sector in the last quarter of 2023 amounted to 355, for a decrease of 11.9% compared to the same period in 2022, according to the National Statistics Office (ONE), based on data provided by the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (Mivhed).

According to the “Bulletin of Sectoral Macroeconomic and Sectoral Statistics Division October-December 2023”, the area built with a license for the aforementioned time was 2,308,605 square meters, with 75.3% of the built areas corresponding to the apartment modality.

The ONE bulletin offers preliminary information on the behavior of the economy, comparing it with the quarter of the previous year and includes some of the most relevant sectors, such as agriculture, construction, energy, transport, tourism, national accounts, prices, stock market, insurance market, monetary system, external sector and foreign exchange market.

The publication specifies that the appraised value of housing units in the private sector reached RD$33.793 billion in the October-December quarter, 50% of which corresponds to the Santo Domingo area. The number of appraised housing units was 26,002.

Tourism

Tourism data indicates that the average hotel occupancy rate during the October-December quarter remained at 73.3%, representing a 2.0% increase. The areas with the highest average growth during this period were Boca Chica-Juan Dolio at 10.9%, while Santiago grew by 10.7%, according to the report, which cites data from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD).

Providing data on the arrival of non-resident passengers in the aforementioned quarter, the report places the figure at 2,035,050, of which 81.9% were non-resident foreigners and 18.1% were non-resident Dominicans.
