The institution inspected 180 vehicles, cited 85 for violations, and reminded that any fare adjustment must be approved in accordance with Law 63-17
SANTO DOMINGO.- The Government intervened in several public transport routes in Santiago after detecting unauthorized increases in the price of the fare, an action with which it seeks to guarantee that fares remain regulated and avoid improper charges to users.
According to information provided by the Presidency of the Republic, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) deployed a supervision and inspection operation in coordination with the National Police, the General Directorate of Transit and Land Transportation Security (Digesett) and the Mayor's Office of Santiago, after identifying irregular increases in some urban transport routes.
The operation covered 17 routes affiliated with the CNTT Federation, where authorities verified the fares charged to passengers, the documentation of drivers, and compliance with the provisions established in Law 63-17 on Mobility, Land Transport, Transit, and Road Safety.
More than 80 vehicles were inspected
As part of the operation, authorities inspected 180 public transport vehicles.
Of that total, 85 were inspected for non-compliance with current regulations, while three units were detaineddue to irregularities detected during the inspections.
Additionally, three foreign nationals were inspected in accordance with the procedures established by the authorities.
The interventions were carried out on routes CA, E, F, G, H, HB, HV (Villa Bao-Hato del Yaque), L, N (Negrito-Camaján), NC (Franjas), P, PA, PC, RPA, SP (Santiago-Puñal), U and Tamboril-Santiago.
Intrant says the increases are concentrated on a few routes
Intrant's executive director, Milton Morrison, explained that the actions were directed only at routes where irregular increases in fare collection were detected.
According to him, 99% of organized transport has maintained its commitment not to increase fares, respecting the agreements reached with the institution.
He added that more than 95% of public transport organizations have supported the decision to keep fares unchanged while the support mechanisms for the sector remain in place.
Subsidies continue to support transportation
Morrison noted that the Government maintains measures to reduce the operating costs of transporters, including the fuel subsidy and the Bono Gas Chofer program, aimed at thousands of public transport drivers.
In that regard, he reiterated that any modification to the rates must be based on technical studies and have the authorization of Intrant, the entity responsible for regulating the rate system of public passenger transport in accordance with Law 63-17.
Operations will continue in other provinces
The institution reported that it will continue to conduct monitoring and inspection activities in different provinces of the country in order to protect public transport users, ensure compliance with current regulations and prevent fare increases that do not have the corresponding authorization.
