SANTO DOMINGO.- In light of the recent rains across the country, the National District Mayor's Office has called on construction workers, merchants, and citizens in general to take measures to prevent the obstruction of drains and sewers with materials and debris carried by the rains.
Through a campaign, the city council seeks to raise awareness about the responsibility that citizens, including builders and merchants, have to keep drainage ditches clear, in order to prevent flooding resulting from the effects of climate change.
In a statement, the City Council asked construction companies to store and cover the sand to prevent it from being washed away by the rains, thus also avoiding losses. It also urged them to safeguard any products that could be affected by water in storage facilities.
In that regard, the Dominican Association of Housing Builders and Developers (Acoprovi) joined the call, urging its members to clean the ditches and drains in the areas surrounding the construction sites.
Similarly, the Mayor's Office of the National District suggested to merchants a proper handling of the waste produced in their businesses, collaborating by placing garbage bags in places and times established for collection.
The City Council extended the call to the general public to keep the fronts of their houses clean, avoiding the accumulation of leaves and debris that could obstruct the drains.
He also asked people not to put garbage bags out on the fronts and sidewalks when rain is expected, to prevent them from clogging the drains.
