SANTO DOMINGO.- The Government, through the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), will invest a total of RD$460 million to continue with the remodeling of the Colonial City, the main tourist attraction of Santo Domingo.

The announcement was made by President Luis Abinader, after a nearly two-hour meeting with the Tourism Cabinet at the Borgellá Palace, located in the historic center of the capital.

The head of state clarified that the investment is with funds from the Ministry of Tourism and is not related to the US$90 million loan approved a few months ago by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to carry out the second phase of repairs, through the Comprehensive Program for Tourism and Urban Development of the Colonial City.

Specifically, the money will be focused on repairing some streets, monuments, and other small works that were not included in the IDB loan, the president indicated.

"For the first time in 30 years, all the monuments of the Colonial City will be restored," highlighted David Collado, head of the Ministry of Tourism, in that context.

In addition, the meeting analyzed other tourism projects: the Santo Domingo Convention Center, the redevelopment of Las Terrenas beach in Samaná, and the Bergantín beach project in Puerto Plata, where the government intends to install a film studio with actor Vin Diesel.

Since Danilo Medina's administration, the Colonial City has undergone a restoration process to transform it into a magnet that attracts a percentage of the millions of tourists who visit the country.

Abinader's last visit to the Colonial Zone was in early September of this year, when he toured several restaurants and streets with various officials. At that time, he invited the public to learn about the history of the Dominican Republic.
