President Luis Abinader appointed economist Pavel Isa Contreras as the new Minister of Economy, Planning, and Development last night. The appointment is contained in Decree 361-22. He also appointed Miguel Ceara Hatton as the new Minister of Environment and Natural Resources.
Banks propose measures to promote employment and economic activity
The Dominican Republic's Association of Multiple Banks (ABA) emphasized the importance of public and private sector collaboration in adopting measures to sustain employment and economic activity in the country, at a time when the international economic outlook is becoming increasingly uncertain. The ABA considered the actions of monetary authorities to be appropriate, as they have adopted initiatives aimed at reducing inflation through increases in monetary policy rates (MPRs), similar to those taken this year by the U.S. Federal Reserve and other central banks in the region.
The Dominican peso remains strong against a competing dollar and euro
Unlike other Latin American countries, where the dollar has reportedly risen steadily to historic highs amid a global scenario marked by apprehensions about a possible recession in the United States, in the Dominican Republic the exchange rate of the main currency remains low, as does the euro, which has experienced a considerable international decline, almost matching the dollar.
Popular and Conadis join forces to increase banking inclusion for people with disabilities
Banco Popular Dominicano and the National Council for Disability (Conadis) signed a collaboration agreement with the aim of increasing equality of rights, inclusion and access to financial services and products for people with disabilities through the banking entity.
In less than two years, Abinader has suspended or dismissed more than 40 officials
The Minister of the Presidency, Lisandro Macarrulla, is the latest in a list of more than 40 officials in the current government who have requested or taken leave of absence due to some scandal, mainly corruption, in the almost two years of government.
Partial closure of Duarte Bridge for repairs
The Minister of Public Works and Communications, Deligne Ascensión, reported yesterday that renovation work will be carried out on the Duarte Bridge for about 60 days, due to the poor condition of the structure.
