The port of Cabo Rojo welcomed its fourth cruise ship of 2024 this Wednesday, bringing over 2,000 tourists from Florida and other regions. From early morning, local authorities gathered at the pier to greet the visitors, who took advantage of their stay to explore beaches, enjoy local cuisine, and visit recreational sites in Pedernales.
Cruise ship passengers traveled in closed vehicles and three-wheeled motorcycles to the Municipal Park, where they found cultural activities organized in their honor. Folkloric and cultural groups enlivened the atmosphere, and tourists had the opportunity to purchase local handicrafts, although a lower participation of local vendors was reported, which generated mixed opinions among community members.
Unlike previous visits, this time the experience was marred by a power outage in the Cabo Rojo beach area, due to maintenance work previously announced by the Southern Electricity Distribution Company (Edesur). This disrupted the music and lively atmosphere that usually accompanies the arrival of cruise ships, leaving the beach roundabout unusually quiet.
Despite this situation, tourists enjoyed swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Cabo Rojo and the local cuisine , which was specially prepared to welcome visitors. In the Municipal Park, folkloric groups performed to entertain those present, while tourists explored the area riding the colorful motorcycles known as "Las Margaritas."
Among the residents of Pedernales, opinions differed regarding the benefits of cruise ship arrivals. Some emphasized that these visits mark a milestone in the province's tourism development, while others criticized the fact that most of the handicrafts and products sold come from other regions of the country, limiting the direct economic impact on the local community.
Security and migration control
Throughout the day, heavy security measures were deployed on the roads leading to Cabo Rojo to maintain order and prevent accidents. The absence of Haitians on the streets of Pedernales was also noticeable.
