Founder of Grupo Ramos dies

SANTO DOMINGO– Grupo Ramos announced this Thursday the passing of its founder and president emeritus, Román Ramos Uría, on August 5, 2026.

Through its social media channels, the consortium explained that the businessman arrived in Santo Domingo in 1959 at the age of seventeen, and in 1963 took over the management of La Sirena, the small store that he purchased two years later and which, over time, would give rise to Grupo Ramos. He dedicated more than six decades to building one of the most important companies in Dominican commerce.

His career, the statement explains, was recognized in both Spain and the Dominican Republic. In 2016, King Felipe VI awarded him the Order of Civil Merit, in the rank of Commander. In 2025, President Luis Abinader granted him Dominican citizenship through privileged naturalization.

Mr. Román Ramos Uría is survived by his wife, María del Carmen Fernández De Ramos, his five children, Mercedes, Román, Maricarmen, Ana María, and Laura, nineteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

The Group expressed its gratitude for the outpouring of affection and solidarity received.
