Events for the first anniversary of the Jet Set tragedy have been moved to this Thursday, April 9th

SANTO DOMINGO.– The heavy rainfall that has occurred in the country in recent hours has led to the postponement of the commemorative events for the first anniversary of the Jet Set tragedy, the event that plunged the entire Dominican society into mourning on April 8 of last year by causing the death of 236 people and around 200 injured, to this Thursday the 9th, a day later.

Since early this morning, an atmospheric phenomenon has affected the climatic conditions of the Dominican Republic, generating significant accumulations of water, which broke the national daily routine, with suspensions of teaching, work changes and disruptions in the lives of the population.

Given the circumstances, the Jet Set Justice Movement, the entity in charge of organizing the commemorative activities, issued a statement on its social networks, informing that the tribute to the victims of the Jet Set will take place on Thursday, at the same times.

He emphasizes that the decision is in accordance with the authorities' directives.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control and in compliance with the provisions issued by relevant institutions, it has been necessary to postpone the commemorative event scheduled for the first anniversary of the Jet Set tragedy,” the statement explains.

The commemorative events

The tributes would begin at 10:00 a.m. with a mass, according to Father Rogelio Cruz.

“Given what happened here, we didn’t want this day to just pass by,” he said, referring to the efforts made together with family members and members of the movement.

According to him, after establishing contact with the Mayor's Office of the National District, headed by Carolina Mejía, logistical facilities were arranged, such as the installation of tents and the adaptation of the space for the attendees.

Among the scheduled activities, Cruz cited symbolic acts, testimonies from survivors and family members, a vigil, recognitions, a mass in the morning, a lunch and a eucharist in the afternoon at the place where the tragedy occurred.
