SANTO DOMINGO. –The Dominican Confederation of Micro, Small and Medium Construction Companies Inc. (COPYMECON) congratulated Jean Luis Rodríguez Jiménez as Minister of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED), and expressed its confidence that his experience in public administration and in coordinating initiatives with the private sector will contribute to strengthening the construction industry and generating new opportunities for construction SMEs.
The president of COPYMECON, Eliseo Cristopher, emphasized that the new minister is assuming his duties at a crucial time, as the construction sector begins to show significant signs of recovery after several months of sluggish growth and contraction. According to figures from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, the sector's activity registered a year-on-year growth of 14.9% in June 2026, placing it among the activities with the greatest impact on economic growth that month.
“We are seeing positive signs that we must consolidate. The challenge is not only for construction to grow, but to ensure that this growth generates opportunities for construction SMEs and translates into housing, infrastructure, jobs, and development throughout the country,” said Eliseo Cristopher.
COPYMECON commended the initiatives recently promoted by the Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Housing (MIVHED) to revitalize the sector and generate opportunities for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and considered it important to continue and strengthen these efforts during the new administration. This organization stated that this new phase represents an opportunity to advance the effective inclusion of construction MSMEs in government housing programs, not only as contractors, but also as developers of housing projects, as well as to strengthen their participation in public procurement and contracting processes for the execution of works and buildings.
“The Dominican Republic must move towards a model in which the construction of housing and public works throughout the national territory effectively incorporates construction MSMEs, taking advantage of their territorial presence, execution capacity and generation of local jobs,” Cristopher noted.
COPYMECON also valued the experience accumulated by Jean Luis Rodríguez at the head of the Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM), particularly in the articulation of initiatives between the public and private sectors to develop important infrastructure projects.
“This experience is a positive sign. We trust that the Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Housing (MIVHED) can also promote innovative collaboration mechanisms that will allow construction micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to be incorporated into housing and construction projects throughout the country,” said Eliseo Cristopher.
Cristopher also emphasized their willingness to continue strengthening institutional relations with the Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Housing (MIVHED) in a constructive and proactive manner, contributing proposals, identifying obstacles, and promoting solutions. Their commitment has always been to dialogue and consensus-building, coupled with a firm and responsible representation of the interests of construction micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
