CODIA asks the Government to allow the import of construction materials in 2023 to lower housing costs

SANTO DOMINGO.- Cristian Rojas Mora, president of CODIA, the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors, is asking the Government to allow the importation of construction materials in 2023 to reduce housing prices in the country.

During 2022, the inputs for building houses maintained high prices, triggering various consequences, one of them cited in the latest report of the Central Bank, was that this situation constituted one of the main causes of the construction sector's decreased growth during the past year.

“We want the government to allow the import of construction materials such as cement and steel, which are the main components and those that increase the price of housing,” requested the president of the Codians, when El Inmobiliario asked him to detail his wishes for 2023.

He believes that the lower cost of construction materials will make it easier for people with limited resources to acquire a roof, even if it is low-cost, giving them the opportunity to own their first home.

Another aspect that Rojas Mora mentions is the realization of the aggregates, which also maintained high prices last year and situations of shortages.

Rojas Mora strongly hopes that institutions involved in public works contracts will hold more lotteries and give more opportunities to the country's engineers and architects, as he asserts that their current situation is far from ideal.

“So these tenders that the Government makes do not give an opportunity to the majority of the members of CODIA, therefore we are requesting that, since the President of the Republic is the head of all the directors and ministers who have to do with the contracting of works of the national budget, then order him to carry out more lotteries so that there are more opportunities for the engineers and architects of the country,” he explained.
