SANTO DOMINGO.-After two failed attempts at voting, the Chamber of Deputies approved in its first reading the Public Trust bill that seeks to regulate this legal act.
The bill passed without the support of a majority of opposition party members, as had happened before the close of the previous ordinary legislative session. Because the bill's statute of limitations had expired, it had to be taken up again in the current extraordinary legislative session.
The Public Trust bill was approved with 94 votes in favor, two against, and 64 abstentions.
In the first vote, which did not succeed, the bill only received 88 votes in favor, two against, and 52 abstentions. In the second attempt, which also failed, it registered 90 votes in favor, two against, and 56 abstentions.
The plenary session of the Lower House exempted the bill from the procedures of going to committee and reading.
The initiative will have to be discussed a second time before being studied and approved by the Senate.
