Cabo Rojo: the Dominican Republic's new internationally branded tourist destination

Freund announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Cabo Rojo International Airport, located in Oviedo, will take place in the first week of March 2024.

The General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP) and the Ministry of Tourism presented this Friday, within the International Tourism Fair (Fitur 2024), the new identity of Cabo Rojo, in a proposal that projects it as the new international brand tourist destination of the Dominican Republic.

“Cabo Rojo: Discover the new Caribbean” is the slogan that underpins the identity with which the Dominican Government invites visitors to explore one of the most promising destinations for explorers seeking to discover unique coastal and desert landscapes in the country.

The logo, representing a unique place for adventures and full of surprising corners, has been designed with elements that distinguish it such as: the cactus, its geographical delimitation, color, shapes and elevations of the Pelempito pit, caves of the eagles, Romeo's wells, the beauty of the keys and the port.

Cabo Rojo, located in the south of the country, has unique geographical characteristics, protected natural areas, parks, lagoons and lakes that harbor a rich biodiversity, and received its first cruise ship in January 2024.

At the brand launch event, which was attended by the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, and the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to Spain, Juan Bolívar Díaz, the executive director of the DGAPP, Sigmund Freund, presented the history of the emergence of Cabo Rojo as a destination, highlighting its potential and attractions for the development of an international branded tourism offer.

Freund announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Cabo Rojo International Airport, located in Oviedo, will take place during the first week of March 2024. "This will complete the necessary steps for the tourism development of this region," the official stated.

He highlighted that, as a sign of the destination's commitment to the environment, a study of the tourist carrying capacity of Cabo Rojo and the Bahía de las Águilas recreation area was carried out for the first time in the country.

“This gives us information on how many visitors can be enjoying the beaches of Bahía de las Águilas at any one time. With this, we guarantee the protection of a jewel that we have undoubtedly named “The Crown Jewel of Cabo Rojo.”.

He added that they have launched a conservation program for endemic and native species implemented before starting construction work with the creation of the Cabo Rojo Nursery.

Sigmund Freund highlighted the progress made in the works being carried out in Cabo Rojo.

"The first three hotels under construction are progressing well, and it is projected that the first hotel, intended to be operated by the Spanish-owned hotel chain Iberostar, will partially open before the end of the year. The other two hotels will begin operations in the first half of 2025," Freund stated while participating in several news programs broadcast live from the IFEMA trade fair grounds.

Regarding the access roads and the Pedernales-Enriquillo highway, Freund assured that some sections are already at the asphalt level and that work is proceeding according to schedule so that they will be ready in the shortest possible time.

First cruise ship in history
On January 4th of this year, the town of Pedernales received its first cruise ship at Port Cabo Rojo, the cruise terminal whose first phase was inaugurated that day with the arrival of 2,557 excursionists from different parts of the world.

The Norwegian Pearl, from the Norwegian cruise line, set sail from Cabo Rojo, bringing joy to the locals. It was received by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, along with the executive director of the DGAPP, Sigmund Freund, the Minister of the Presidency, Joel Santos, the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, the executive director of the Port Authority (Apordom), Jean Luis Rodríguez, the president of the ITM Group, the port's concessionaire company, and other officials and representatives of the business sector.
