Boca Chica recovers parks and community spaces amid the renovation of its waterfront

The delivery of three parks and the remodeling of a church add RD$76.5 million to the urban interventions of a destination that seeks to renew its tourist infrastructure and improve spaces for collective use

BOCA CHICA. – The recovery of public spaces is another piece of the urban renewal process that Boca Chica is experiencing, where the works planned for its waterfront are complemented by the delivery of three parks and the remodeling of the San Rafael Arcángel parish, works carried out with a joint investment of RD$76,532,953.

Tourism Minister David Collado yesterday delivered Los Caracoles Plaza, the municipal park, the children's park, and the San Rafael Arcángel parish, four projects that combine recreation, urban conditioning, and the recovery of community spaces in one of the traditional tourist destinations of the Santo Domingo province.

The projects are particularly significant in a municipality where tourism coexists with the daily needs of its residents. The parks offer spaces for gathering and recreation, while the parish building incorporates facilities for administrative and community activities.

The handover coincides with the execution of other projects aimed at renewing Boca Chica's infrastructure. These include the reconstruction of the Andrés waterfront, work on which began last June and encompasses an area of approximately 53,806 square meters, with improvements to the coastal promenade, access roads, drainage, lighting, and recreational areas.

These are different projects, but linked by the same urban challenge: improving the conditions of public spaces and services in a municipality whose tourist appeal also depends on the quality of its environment.

Four works in spaces for collective use

The Los Caracoles plaza received an investment of RD$16,745,425 and is located next to Duarte Avenue and close to the beach. The intervention covered 1,495 square meters, distributed among green areas, pavements and sand paths.

The works included the construction of a small square, landscaping, lighting, renovation of pavements, installation of benches, trash cans and bollards, restoration of swings and conditioning of sidewalks and signage.

The children's park in Boca Chica was rebuilt with an investment of RD$19,970,944. It is located at the intersection of San Rafael and Duarte avenues, and occupies an area of 1,222 square meters.

The intervention included the reconstruction of sidewalks, curbs, curbs and children's play areas, in addition to the conditioning of the gazebo, the installation of street furniture and lighting, the enabling of access ramps and the renovation of the booth used by taxi drivers and the equipping of the existing sales module was considered.

In the central park, the work represented an investment of RD$17,010,000 and covered 1,472 square meters. The project included a plaza with lighting, green areas, pavement renovation, access ramps, street furniture, children's play areas, lighting and signage, as well as the reconstruction of curbs and gutters.

The fourth intervention was at the San Rafael Arcángel parish, whose remodeling cost RD$22,806,583. The work covered an area of 971.5 square meters, with work on the religious building and its exterior spaces.

The project incorporated improvements to the facilities, an administrative area, public restrooms, an activity room and a space designated for the sacristy, in addition to landscaping work.

Renewal beyond the beach

This initiative is complemented by the government's announcement of a comprehensive transformation plan for Boca Chica. (External source).

The reconstruction of Andrés's waterfront is part of the interventions promoted by the Ministry of Tourism to renew the municipality's infrastructure. In addition to improvements to the coastal promenade, the project includes spaces for vendors, restrooms and showers, a children's playground, exercise areas, parking, and measures to improve mobility in the surrounding area.

This initiative is complemented by the government's announcement of a comprehensive transformation plan for Boca Chica, with public and private investments earmarked for infrastructure, sanitation, lighting, services, and tourism development.

In that scenario, the recovery of parks and other community spaces adds an urban dimension to the renewal of the destination.

The scope of these interventions is not limited to the experience of those who visit the area: it also includes the places where residents meet, take their children to play, and participate in community activities.

The challenge for Boca Chica is to ensure that infrastructure improvements and the renewal of its tourism offerings translate into functional, accessible, and well-maintained public spaces, capable of responding to the needs of both the local population and its visitors.
