SANTO DOMINGO.– The Specialized Prosecutor's Office for the Defense of the Environment and Natural Resources (Proedemaren) announced that it will bring to court a real estate developer that, in violation of environmental laws, destroyed endangered mangroves and filled lagoons in a protected area of Punta Cana, with the aim of making way for a tourism project.
Francisco Contreras, head of Proedemaren, explained that the company Inversiones Zahena affected an area of high sensitivity for migratory air and sea species to build the Cana Bay, Beach Club & Golf Resort-Dominican Republic project.
He said that Inversiones Zahena carried out the clearing under a permit issued on November 9, 2021 by the provincial director of La Altagracia, of the Ministry of Environment, Santo Amado de la Rosa.

He explained that, although the real estate company claims to have obtained a permit from a regional ministry official, during an inspection visit he led last Tuesday, he was able to verify that debris from a large area of mangroves, after its deforestation, was used by the development company as material to fill a lagoon, with the purpose of creating a transit route.
The members of the Public Ministry received the cooperation of the Academy of Sciences in the person of the environmentalist Eleuterio Martínez.
Among the affected species are those listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
