SANTO DOMINGO.- MIVED, the Ministry of Housing and Buildings, has seen a 20% increase in applications for building permits, rising from 105 applications in 2019 to 124 per month in 2022, according to the entity, which claims to have received "historic" applications this year that surpass the figures recorded so far in that entity.
In a report, the government entity reports an increase in monthly building permit issuances, which went from 121 in 2019 to 129 per month in 2022, for an increase of 6%.
Mived also reports the "decrease in the average number of days for issuing building permits, which took 113 days in 2019 and currently takes 86, for a reduction of 24%.".
“Thanks to the efforts of our entire team, we are currently receiving a record number of applications and issuing more building permits in less time. This indicates that we have made the processes related to building permits more efficient and transparent,” says engineer Carlos Bonilla, the agency's minister.
In its report, Mived explains that starting in March of this year, the Processing, Valuation and Licensing Directorate began its in-person operations, and with its implementation and a series of measures to make the processes more efficient and transparent, the management indicators have shown "conclusive improvements".
The Ministry of Housing reports that 159 building permit applications were received last September, the highest number of applications in the institution's history. "This demonstrates the strengthening of the construction sector in the country, which represented 16% of GDP in the first half of 2022," the government agency stated.
The entity says it projects to close 2022 with 1,620 construction licenses issued, "which would represent an investment linked solely to direct construction costs of RD$389 billion Dominican pesos, positively impacting the national economy and the construction sector," the report states.
