SANTO DOMINGO –President Luis Abinader predicted a year of economic growth for the Dominican Republic, which he claims will surpass other countries in the region, attributing this to policies of austerity and transparent management of state resources.
Abinader spoke in the province of Puerto Plata on Monday morning, during the remodeling of the Community Technology Center in the municipality of Imbert.
“As a country, we will continue to move forward and improve the quality of life for Dominicans. As all international economic indicators show, we were among the fastest growing economies in 2022, and we will continue to do so in 2023,” Abinader said.
It is worth noting that in December, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) reported that the Dominican Republic's economy is projected to grow by 4.6% in 2023, a slight decrease from the 4.7% it had projected last October. However, despite this reduction, it will remain among the region's leading economies.
About technology centers
The president highlighted the importance the government places on young people, who, with inaugurations like the technology centers, are given better opportunities.
"There are days when up to five cruise ships arrive in Puerto Plata, and the free trade zones are also growing... This is about breaking the cycle of poverty, education, opportunities for businesses, social peace, unity of criteria, and that's how we are moving forward; it's a coherent policy," the president stated.
"We only have 11 left out of more than 100 technology centers that we are remodeling and putting into operation. The 14/24 program is designed for the NEETs, who neither worked nor studied. These young people will now have to be called the 'Sisi' if they study and if they work," the president indicated.
Regarding the inauguration of the remodeled Imbert Community Technology Center, young people from the municipality of Puerto Plata will be able to train in technical careers, such as computer science, communication, among others.
