Traffic Guardians graduates its first high school students

SANTO DOMINGO.– A group of 58 high school graduates received their learner's permits yesterday, Monday, July 20, as part of the Traffic Guardians program, an initiative developed by the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant), together with the Ministry of Education (Minerd), to incorporate road safety education into the training of Dominican students.

The program allowed young people to complete 30 of the 60 hours of community service required to graduate from high school, while receiving training in road safety, responsible mobility and citizenship, knowledge that allows them to formally begin their process to obtain a driver's license, according to the Presidency.

Young people from Azua and Santo Domingo receive their first ID cards

According to the entity, among the first students to receive this benefit are 17 students from the Emilio Prud'Homme High School in Azua, who became the first public educational center outside of Greater Santo Domingo to deliver the learning card along with the high school diploma.

Subsequently, 15 students from the Víctor Garrido Puello High School in Santo Domingo received this document, becoming the first public educational center in Greater Santo Domingo to achieve this milestone.

The Ozama Psychopedagogical Center was the first to implement the pilot plan of the initiative, where 14 students received the first official cards of the program.

Road safety education from the classroom

Intrant's executive director, Milton Morrison, emphasized that early traffic education helps create more aware and responsible citizens.

“These young people not only fulfill their community service hours, but also acquire knowledge and experiences that make them more aware and committed citizens of their community,” Morrison said.

The Traffic Guardians program combines theoretical and practical training on mobility, road safety, and Law 63-17 on Mobility, Land Transportation, Traffic, and Road Safety. In addition, students participate in activities at the Intrant Road Safety Education Park, identify mobility problems in their communities, and propose solutions, the Presidency reported.

More than 600 students trained

To date, the program has trained 620 students from six educational centers: Ozama Psychopedagogical Center, Emilio Prud'Homme High School, Antonio Duvergé High School, Víctor Garrido Puello High School, Fernando Arturo de Meriño School (CAFAM) and Fray Balbino Pineda Polytechnic.

Intrant explained that the initiative is projected to benefit approximately 2,000 students in its next stages, with the goal of expanding road safety education in schools and promoting a culture of respect for traffic rules among new generations.
