SANTO DOMINGO.– The combination of a trough and a tropical wave will maintain favorable conditions for moderate to heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across much of the country on Thursday, while the risk of flash floods persists in several provinces, the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported.
According to the agency, both atmospheric systems will continue to generate abundant humidity and instability, especially during the afternoon and early evening, when the greatest intensity of rainfall is expected over the northeast, southeast, southwest regions, the Central Mountain Range and the border area.
The rains will affect localities in La Altagracia, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, San José de Ocoa, San Cristóbal, Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, Puerto Plata, Valverde, Espaillat, San Juan, Elías Piña, Dajabón, Independencia, Bahoruco and Greater Santo Domingo, among other nearby provinces.
Eight provinces remain on alert
According to Indomet, weather alerts remain in effect for Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Monte Plata, San Pedro de Macorís, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, La Vega and Duarte, due to the risk of urban and rural flooding, rising rivers, streams and ravines, as well as possible landslides in vulnerable areas.
The institution urged the public to stay tuned to official bulletins and follow the recommendations of civil protection agencies.
The heat will persist despite the rains
Although rainfall will dominate much of the day, the atmosphere will remain hot due to the time of year and the presence of Saharan dust particles.
Indomet recommended drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing, staying in cool places, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., especially for children, the elderly, and pregnant women, who are considered the most vulnerable groups.
They also warn about abnormal swells
In addition to the rainy conditions, the agency reported that abnormal swells continue on both coasts of the country, so it recommended that vessel operators consult the marine forecast before carrying out activities at sea.
For Greater Santo Domingo, the forecast indicates showers during the morning and a significant increase in cloud cover in the afternoon, accompanied by downpours, thunderstorms and isolated gusts of wind.
