The program includes more than 28 projects that seek to revitalize the area without affecting its heritage value
SANTO DOMINGO.– The Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program for the Colonial City of Santo Domingo (Pidtuccsd) is progressing in its intervention process with the goal of delivering the remodeled streets no later than October, while the total completion of the works is scheduled for December of this year, according to the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR).
During a tour of the Colonial City on Wednesday, representatives from the tourism sector observed the progress of the renovation work on streets, historical buildings, religious temples, cultural centers, and homes. According to the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR), the project aims to modernize the urban infrastructure without altering the historical character of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, founded in 1502.
Architect Amín Santos explained that the Ministry is carrying out these interventions through the comprehensive program, which currently includes more than 28 projects under development, all aimed at revitalizing the historic center.
“The program began in February 2023 and is 86.80% complete. All the works are designed according to a schedule that allows for their progressive delivery,” he said.
Interventions, mobility and waste
As part of the modernization of the area, Santos highlighted the implementation of a solid waste collection system using electric trucks, four of which will become operational in the coming days, with the aim of improving waste management and reducing garbage accumulation.
He also presented progress in the construction of a new public parking lot, infrastructure considered key to increasing the capacity to receive visitors in the Colonial City.
The official explained that the delays in some projects are due to technical and administrative processes required before each intervention, including preliminary studies, institutional permits, and specialized surveys.
“Factors such as rainfall, archaeological findings, and inter-institutional approval processes also play a role, but once the works have started, a defined schedule is followed,” he said.
Businessman Emilio Torres highlighted the current economic impact of the area and assured that the shopping centers located on El Conde street generate more than 1,500 jobs.
In his opinion, the renovation of the streets, along with the strengthening of lighting and security, will have a direct effect on increasing sales and boosting employment in the area.
A commitment to conservation and modernization
The Ministry of Tourism reported that it seeks to transform the Colonial City into a more accessible, functional and attractive space for national and international visitors, without losing its historical and heritage value.
