The recent holiday weekend left a balance sheet that combines figures, prevention, and citizen behavior
SANTO DOMINGO.- During the live broadcast of the Emergency Operations Center (COE) bulletin, authorities presented the final balance of the "Conscience for Life 2026" operation, highlighting a reduction in deaths and more responsible citizen behavior during the holiday.
Balance sheet presented
The director of the COE, Juan Manuel Méndez García, stressed that the population showed a more prudent attitude compared to previous years, which influenced the results of the operation.
He also indicated that the success of the day was also supported by the work of the media, whose dissemination of preventive messages contributed to creating greater awareness during Holy Week.
For his part, the director of the RD Vial trust, Osto Ricit Lugo, pointed out that more than seven million people traveled through the country's toll roads, reflecting the high traffic recorded during those days.
Accidents and fatalities
Méndez García reported that during the operation, 203 traffic accidents were recorded, leaving 276 people affected.
In total, 27 deaths were reported, representing a 15.63% compared to 2025. He emphasized that motorcycles continue to be the main risk factor, accounting for the majority of incidents and deaths.
He also indicated that more than 80% of the deaths were linked to traffic accidents, while the rest were mainly due to drowning.
Extensive assistance across the country
The COE detailed that more than 30,000 public assistance services were provided, including roadside assistance and medical care.
Additionally, 24 minors reported missing were located and returned to their families, while 22 people were rescued at sea.
Colonel Jorge Rivera López stated that more than 2,300 vehicle assistance services were provided during the operation, highlighting the response capacity on the country's main highways.
Poisonings, one of the main challenges
The COE director indicated that 506 people were affected by alcohol consumption during the holiday.
For his part, the representative of the National Health Service, Joanny Ramírez, specified that 28 of these cases corresponded to minors, aged between 14 and 17 years.
In addition, 207 cases of food poisoning were treated at various health centers across the country.
Infrastructure and prevention influenced the results
Osto Ricit Lugo explained that improvements in road infrastructure have helped reduce accidents, thanks to the widening of roads, new bypasses, and controls at critical points.
He added that the resources generated from tolls are reinvested in projects that strengthen road safety and connectivity throughout the national territory.
A large-scale operation
The COE highlighted that more than 50,000 collaborators participated in the operation, integrating security, health and rescue institutions.
Méndez García reiterated his gratitude to all the entities involved and affirmed that the results reflect a joint effort by the State.
Despite the reduction in numbers, authorities stressed the importance of remaining cautious, especially when using motorcycles and consuming alcohol responsibly.
