The investments include new electrical networks, lighting, and photovoltaic systems that will benefit communities in Tamayo, Neiba, Villa Jaragua, and other municipalities in the province
SANTO DOMINGO – The Dominican government announced investments exceeding RD$48.5 million to expand access to electricity in rural communities of Bahoruco province, through network extension projects, installation of lighting and photovoltaic systems to be implemented between 2026 and 2027.
The information was released by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), after Minister Joel Santos led the inauguration of a project to rehabilitate and extend electrical networks in the municipal district of Uvilla, the El Jobo section and the José Francisco Peña Gómez neighborhood, in the municipality of Tamayo.
According to the Presidency, the inaugurated project required an investment of RD$19.5 million and will directly benefit some 375 families in the area, as part of the efforts to expand energy coverage in rural communities.
New projects for the province
During the event, Santos also announced the implementation of new extensions of electrical networks in the communities of Mena Abajo and Vuelta Grande, with an estimated investment of RD$29 million.
This will be complemented by the installation of 250 light fixtures and the construction of 36 additional projects encompassing electrical networks, public lighting, and photovoltaic systems in various parts of Bahoruco.
According to the ministry, the initiatives will impact communities in Tamayo, Villa Jaragua, Los Ríos, Neiba, El Palmar, Monserrat, Clavellinas, Santana and Santa Bárbara, among other locations in the province.
Reducing energy gaps
The Ministry of Energy and Mines indicated that the works are part of the rural electrification program that it is carrying out through the Directorate of Rural and Suburban Electrification (DERS), with the objective of reducing the gaps in access to energy in vulnerable communities far from the main urban centers.
The institution noted that the availability of electricity directly influences productive activities, community services, citizen security, and the living conditions of families, especially in rural areas where infrastructure limitations persist.
He also highlighted that the projects aim to strengthen the conditions for local economic development, facilitate access to basic services, and expand opportunities for entrepreneurship, education, and other activities linked to community growth.
Plan for 2026-2027
According to the MEM, the projects planned for Bahoruco during the 2026-2027 period include 19 electrical grid extension initiatives, 11 lighting installation projects and six photovoltaic systems.
Authorities indicated that these interventions are part of the national electrification strategy aimed at expanding energy coverage and ensuring that rural communities have access to more stable and secure electricity services.
