SANTO DOMINGO – For years, in Barrio Tranquilo (Quiet Neighborhood), the name was more of a wish than a reality. Unpaved streets, dilapidated houses, and an environment marked by neglect were part of daily life. Today, that scenario is beginning to change.
The Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED) reported that it has begun habitat rehabilitation work in this sector of Sabana Yegua, in Azua, with an intervention that, according to the government entity, will directly impact at least 86 families and transform the entire environment of the community.
According to information published on the agency's website, beyond the housing, the project includes the construction of sidewalks and curbs, as well as the paving of more than five kilometers of streets, a historical debt to residents who for decades lived with the dust, mud and deterioration of their roads.
The intervention, according to the press release, is part of a national plan that seeks to provide comprehensive solutions to communities with limited basic infrastructure. In the case of Azua, the investment, according to the Ministry, amounts to approximately 277 million pesos, with a scope that will be progressively extended to other municipalities in the province.
More than a work
For many, the impact is already felt as something more than just a project. Milito Beltré Mora, one of the beneficiaries, doesn't hide his excitement at seeing his home completely renovated. Without the resources to do it himself, he describes the project as an opportunity he simply hadn't had before.
Stories like hers are common in the area. Residents who have lived in precarious conditions for more than five decades are now watching their community begin to transform, not only physically, but also in the quality of life that this entails.
The project aims not only to improve infrastructure, but also to redefine the environment in which these families live. Because when the street, the house, and the surroundings change, so does the way people live.
