Edesur invests RD$649 million to strengthen the electrical grid in areas of greatest urban and real estate growth

SANTO DOMINGO.– The Southern Electricity Distribution Company (Edesur) is implementing a RD$649.1 million to strengthen the electrical infrastructure in its concession area, an intervention that will impact more than 550,000 customers in 179 sectors of the National District, Santo Domingo West, Los Alcarrizos, Pedro Brand, San José de Ocoa, Barahona and Independencia.

According to the statement from Edesur Dominicana published by the Presidency, the program includes the construction of new medium-voltage circuits, the reconfiguration of distribution networks, strategic interconnections between circuits, load transfer, and technical adjustments that seek to increase the operational capacity of the system and improve the continuity of the electricity supply.

The initiative is especially relevant for sectors with high residential, commercial and real estate activity, where energy demand continues to grow driven by new housing projects, urban developments and expansion of services.

In Greater Santo Domingo alone, seven projects are being implemented with an investment exceeding RD$39.2 million, which will benefit more than 465,000 users distributed across 105 sectors, including Piantini, Evaristo Morales, Los Jardines, Los Ríos, Bella Vista, La Julia, Quisqueya, Mirador Sur, Mirador Norte, Zona Universitaria, Los Prados, Arroyo Hondo, Herrera, Pantoja, and Los Alcarrizos.

More capacity for high-demand areas

According to the distributor, one of the main interventions corresponds to the Paraíso substation, where two new medium voltage outputs were enabled, identified as PARA107 and PARA108.

These works allow for a reduction in the load that this infrastructure was supporting and a redistribution of demand towards other nearby substations, increasing operational capacity by over 30%.

The company indicated that this expansion directly benefits more than 43,000 customers in ten sectors of the National District, by improving the levels of voltage, stability and reliability of the service.

Also, the new MATA107 circuit, at the Matadero substation, came into operation, a project that redistributes the energy load among several circuits and strengthens the supply for around 24,500 users.

Another project involves the construction of the UASD108 circuit at the UASD 138 kV substation, with the aim of reducing the overload on the UASD104 circuit and providing a more stable service to more than 5,000 customers.

Infrastructure to support growth

According to the electric company, network reconfiguration work is also being carried out between the Hato Nuevo, Caballona, Los Alcarrizos Free Zone, Herrera, Kilometer 10½ of the Duarte highway and Los Prados substations.

These interventions aim to reduce overload risks, decrease technical losses, and increase the system's responsiveness during periods of high demand.

Energy sector specialists agree that this type of investment is crucial to sustaining urban growth and real estate development, since an electrical grid with greater capacity reduces service interruptions and facilitates the incorporation of new residential, commercial and industrial projects.

National reach

The program also includes improvements to the Las Damas substation in Duvergé; the Vicente Noble substation in Barahona; and the San José de Ocoa substation, as part of the optimization plan scheduled for 2026.

Edesur highlighted that other completed projects have strengthened the supply for more than 257,000 users through the commissioning of the Alfa substation, in addition to benefiting more than 21,000 customers supplied by the Kilometer 10½, Herrera 138 kV and Los Prados substations.

The company stated that the investments are part of a strategy aimed at modernizing the distribution network and increasing the reliability of the electrical system in areas with growing residential, commercial and tourist demand.
