SANTO DOMINGO.– The governments of the Dominican Republic and Hungary are moving forward with formalizing agreements to strengthen air transport relations between the two countries, seeking to boost binational air services.
In that regard, during a meeting held on April 27, 2026, at the headquarters of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), as a preliminary step to the signing of an Air Services Agreement (ASA), marking a decisive advance in strengthening their bilateral relations.
According to a press release, these agreements establish a modern and flexible framework for air operations, allowing airlines to define routes, frequencies and fares based on market criteria, thus facilitating greater connectivity between the two countries.
It highlights that in February 2019, the parties reviewed this instrument, concluding that it was advisable to move towards an updated formal agreement regulating bilateral air services.
Data from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic indicates that between 2019 and February 2026, some 52,000 Hungarian passengers visited the country, records which show a market with high potential for the development of more efficient and even direct routes.
These agreements, the press document elaborates, represent a strategic opportunity to strengthen tourism, trade, investment and bilateral ties, while positioning the Dominican Republic as a key air connectivity hub to Europe and other non-traditional destinations.
The signing of the memorandum was led by Héctor Porcella, president of the JAC, and Máté Lőwinger, director of the Hungarian Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC).
