The entity exceeds US$1 billion in financing to the sector, consolidating its participation within the banking portfolio destined for the tourism industry
SANTO DOMINGO. – Banco Popular Dominicano holds 42.36% of the credit that the national banking system allocates to tourism, with a portfolio amounting to US$1,015 million (RD$60,997 million), according to data from the Dominican Banking Market Information System (SIMBAD) of the Superintendency of Banks.
The entity also records pending disbursement approvals of US$414 million (RD$24,840 million), which expands the availability of financing for new projects in the sector.
Access to credit remains one of the main factors driving tourism development, enabling the construction of hotels, the expansion of infrastructure, and the modernization of existing facilities.
During the forum “Capital, trust and growth: banking and tourism”, organized by the Association of Banks of the Dominican Republic (ABA) and the National Association of Hotels and Tourism (ASONAHORES), the impact of the financial system on the growth of the industry was discussed.
In that context, the bank's CEO, Christopher Paniagua, indicated that the entity's positioning in the sector is part of a long-term support strategy.
“Talking about tourism is talking about growth, jobs, and investment. It is an activity that has a cross-cutting impact on the entire economy,” explained Paniagua, referring to the sector's role in the national economy.
The executive added that the financing is not only focused on new hotel projects, but also on the expansion and renovation of existing infrastructure within the tourism value chain.
He also highlighted that tourism generates a dynamic that strengthens both the financial system and the economy in general, while also boosting the attraction of foreign investment.
