SANTO DOMINGO– A collision between two trains on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital left at least four dead and dozens injured, in an accident that has reignited concerns about the country's railway safety.
Impact on a key area
The accident occurred at Bekasi Timur station, one of the busiest in the Jakarta metropolitan area, when a long-distance train collided with a commuter train. The collision took place on a high-traffic section of track, which exacerbated the severity of the incident.
The intercity train was carrying hundreds of passengers, who were all evacuated safely without fatalities. In contrast, the most severe damage was concentrated on the commuter train, where the deaths and most of the injuries occurred.
Emergency and medical care operation
Following the crash, rescue teams deployed a large-scale operation in the area. Dozens of ambulances and emergency units worked to evacuate passengers, while rescuers removed debris to assist those trapped.
Authorities confirmed that at least 38 people were taken to health centers with injuries of varying severity, although the number may change as medical evaluations progress.
Ongoing investigation
The causes of the accident have not yet been determined. However, preliminary reports indicate that one of the trains was stopped on the track, which would have caused the second train to collide with it on the same section of track.
