SANTO DOMINGO.-The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) announced yesterday, Tuesday, the establishment of 121 new routes to different destinations around the world, including South America, Europe and the Caribbean, in the first five months of 2024.
During the eleventh plenary meeting of the organization, José Ernesto Marte Piantini, president of the entity, reported that in January-May of this year, 60,043 air operations were approved, of which 3,034 corresponded to flights under the modality of special permits and 3,119 to non-regular or charter, which have resulted in direct and indirect income estimated for the country in the order of 7,646 million dollars.
He pointed out that during the new administration of President Luis Abinader, which will begin on August 16, the increase in air operations will be a decisive factor in optimizing the connectivity of the Dominican territory.
“The addition of new air routes to the sector’s commercial offering during the first five months of the year has expanded and strengthened the country’s connectivity with states and territories in the Caribbean, South America and Europe,” he said.
A press release from the agency highlights that, in order to continue the growth trend in passenger air transport figures, the members of the JAC were informed of the application for renewal of the operating permit of World2Fly and the application for a special permit from the operator Neos, to fly on the routes: Verona /Rome /La Romana; Verona /La Romana /Montego Bay; Rome /La Romana and Malpensa /Punta Cana /Cartagena, with a frequency of one flight.
The document cites data provided by the Statistics Division of the Air Transport Department of the JAC, which states that from January 2023 to May 2024, Neos transported 143,939 passengers in 554 air operations carried out on routes authorized in its operating permit.
Meanwhile, World2Fly, between January 2021 and May 2024, transported 466,387 passengers in 1,246 air operations.
The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) noted that domestic and foreign airlines operating to and from the country are confident about the future of the sector, and this translates into a step towards improving the efficiency of air transport in the Dominican Republic, the statement concludes.
