SANTO DOMINGO– The long-awaited Baní Bypass, a 19.8-kilometer project connecting the southern part of the Dominican Republic, was inaugurated on August 14 of this year in a ceremony led by President Luis Abinader. However, the intense rains of Tropical Storm Melissa put it to the test: a crack in one of its sections revealed its weakness.
Yesterday, the Minister of Public Works and Communications, Eduardo Estrella, explained the reasons during the weekly press conference, the meeting that Abinader holds every Monday to discuss national issues: It was an "opening" and the contractor was called, who went to the site to make the corrections.
"To give you an idea, on a 20-kilometer road, it was a small crack 45 meters long," said the official, information that is published by Diario Libre on this date.
He commented that 60 meters are being torn up to repair the damage under the supervision of Public Works .
"Those slopes (where the crack occurred) are protected with a plant called vetiver, which forms anchors. It seems that in that specific area, the root hadn't taken hold properly, having had so little time, and since it was torrential rain, it had that small mishap, but it's not a major situation to worry about," Estrella stated.
The minister revealed that the contractor , since being called upon, "immediately complied to make the corrections" and, " in fact, today, the small corrections are being made there ."
"Rest assured that this project will be fully operational," Estrella emphasized
He also clarified that the road has not yet been handed over by the contractor to the Ministry of Public Works.
He said that this type of repair has already been done on other roads.
