The Dominican Republic's Ministry of Tourism launches the National Sports Tourism Strategy at FITUR

The Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic presented this Wednesday during the inauguration of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR 2024), the National Strategy for Sports Tourism and the creation of the Public-Private Commission for Sports Tourism.

He also announced the creation of the Dominican House for the Paris 2024 Games, together with the organization Creating Olympic Dreams (CRESO).

The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, said that tourism in the Dominican Republic is more than just sun and sand, and within that diversity, the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) has identified sports tourism as a strategic focus for increasing the number of visitors and the international visibility of the Dominican Republic.

Collado indicated that the Commission is made up of Felipe Vicini, president of CRESO, Luisín Mejía, member of the International Olympic Committee, José Monegro, president of the Santo Domingo 2026 Organizing Committee and David Llibre, president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahares).

The Commission explained that this is the first time the country will have a Dominican House during the Olympic Games, which will serve as the epicenter of the national delegation, as well as a space to present the Country Brand to visitors and celebrate any triumph or medal that Dominican athletes achieve during the Olympic event.

“The Sports Tourism Commission will aim to identify the best opportunities for sporting events that can attract tourists to the country, as well as international events in which the Dominican Republic should participate, in order to strengthen the Country Brand with our athletes, who are our best ambassadors,” said the Minister of Tourism during the event.

For his part, Felipe Vicini stated that “this is a great initiative from MITUR, because through sports, we can improve our country and with a strong sports tourism strategy turn the Dominican Republic into the capital of sporting events in the Caribbean, which in addition to bringing numerous visitors, also has a positive impact on the development of our athletes.”.

Luisín Mejía, who is also president of Centro Caribe Sports, and José Monegro positively valued the initiative, which they considered fundamental to continue creating successful Central American and Caribbean Games for Santo Domingo 2026.

Olympic champions Félix Sánchez and Adeury Corniel were present at the unveiling of what will be the Dominican House in Paris 2024, receiving a warm welcome from all visitors.
