Punta Bergantín obtains international sustainability certification

The Punta Bergantín project announced that it obtained certification from the Center for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE) after passing its program to develop as a sustainable tourist complex with 90 points.

The governance, society and environment indicators that make up their sustainability proposal were rated as a "Sustainability practitioners" initiative.

The project's sustainability proposal was audited and evaluated by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) through the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE), which has a track record of more than 5,000 sustainability and sustainable development trainings provided to professionals from various industries globally.

The sustainability approach considers essential aspects such as energy efficiency, waste management, community engagement initiatives, corporate social responsibility, work ethics, and measures to prevent the effects of climate change.

The proposal was presented by Leonela Vólquez, Director of Community, Sustainability and Research, and Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez Redondo, Sustainability Manager of the project, who also obtained accreditation as sustainability professionals.

Punta Bergantín aims to create a new tourism dynamic in the province of Puerto Plata, transforming this project into an internationally renowned destination with comprehensive development, state-of-the-art facilities, environmental sustainability, and inclusion of the Monte Llano community. The project is promoted by a trust led by Banco de Reservas.

Projections

The Martinón Group has signed an agreement to participate in the project with a hotel from Hyatt's "Inclusive Collection" brand; Meliá, a joint investment of Hoteles Meliá International and the Puntacana Group, as well as Hilton and Marriott, have also joined.

The project covers an area of 10 million square meters. Its master plan preserves the natural beauty, with low urban density, combining hotels, recreational areas, horizontal and vertical housing, and promoting a first-class real estate and tourism destination.

It will implement an assisted ecological revitalization plan with marine hatcheries, coral restoration, and the reintroduction of bird species to restore the ecosystem. In addition, wetland areas will be improved to increase their biodiversity.

This includes planting native flora and fauna, creating trails and viewpoints, and beautifying the landscape with native gardens.

Wetlands will be preserved to protect the complex from flooding and extreme weather events, while also providing scenic attractions for tourists and residents.

The project also includes the restoration of the coastal reef, which is currently degraded due to indiscriminate fishing, sedimentation, and a decline in sea urchins. This ecosystem is vital for protecting the coastline and promoting tourism.

"It is a project designed to attract diversified private investment, which will include, in addition to hotel and residential development, an 18-hole golf course, an academic campus intended to promote education and innovation, a film studio and adequate road infrastructure," a press release highlights.

Punta Bergantín is an initiative of the Dominican government, structured with the economic and professional support of the Reservas Group.
