Government launches National Environmental Award to promote sustainability in the Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO. – Amid environmental challenges and the need to rethink development models, the Dominican government launched the 2026 National Environmental Award, an initiative that seeks to promote sustainable practices and recognize innovative solutions that contribute to more balanced growth in the country.

According to the Presidency of the Dominican Republic, the recognition, promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, marks an evolution in the way environmental management is conceived, broadening its focus towards innovation, research and articulation between sectors.

Beyond rewarding initiatives, the award is conceived as a tool to transform the way goods are produced, resources are managed, and environmental criteria are integrated into decision-making, in a context where sustainability is gaining increasing importance.

Sustainability as the cornerstone of development

Minister Paíno Henríquez emphasized that the proposal reflects a vision in which economic development and environmental protection must advance together.

In this sense, the initiative seeks to position sustainability not as a complement, but as a central axis in the country's growth planning, promoting efficiency, innovation and resilience in the face of current environmental challenges.

Promoting solutions that can be replicated

The coordination of the award will be handled by the Directorate of Sustainable Production and Consumption, headed by Carlos Daniel Taveras, from where the identification of projects with tangible impact will be promoted.

The goal is to highlight initiatives that not only generate positive results, but can also be scaled and replicated in different sectors, thus strengthening a culture of sustainability at the national level.

From production to environmental innovation

Unlike previous editions, the award expands its scope to include areas such as research and innovation, integrating actors from the academic, business and social spheres.

This openness responds to the need to address environmental challenges from multiple perspectives, recognizing that solutions require both technological advances and changes in production and consumption models.

A step towards a circular economy

With this initiative, the country seeks to move towards more sustainable schemes, where resource efficiency, waste reduction and the circular economy become common practices.

The National Environmental Award is thus envisioned as a platform to highlight efforts that are already generating change, while encouraging new proposals that contribute to a more responsible development model.
