Freight transport enters dialogue stage between Intrant and Fenatrado

Representatives from Intrant and Fenatrado analyzed possible measures to expedite freight transit, improve road safety, and strengthen compliance with regulations

SANTO DOMINGO.- The circulation of heavy vehicles and the challenges faced by freight transport were on the table during a meeting between the director of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant), Juan Manuel Méndez, and the president of the National Federation of Dominican Transport (Fenatrado), Ricardo de los Santos.

The meeting allowed for the exchange of proposals aimed at finding solutions for the movement of cargo units, while also seeking to preserve the safety of road users and the application of legal provisions.

Possible measures in the coming days

Méndez indicated that several institutions are working on possible agreements that could translate into favorable changes for the heavy vehicle sector.

“In the coming days, agreements between different institutions could be announced that would bring some improvements regarding heavy vehicles,” the official said, without offering details about the measures that would be implemented.

The initiative is part of the contacts that the current management of Intrant maintains with organizations and sectors related to land mobility, in search of greater coordination to address the difficulties that affect the system.

Fenatrado highlights Méndez's experience

Ricardo de los Santos positively assessed the conversation and stressed the need to maintain constant communication between the authorities and representatives of freight transport.

The business leader also praised Méndez's accumulated experience in public service and expressed his confidence that this background will contribute to the performance of his new role.

“We understand that General Méndez has demonstrated, in every responsibility he has assumed, management skills and institutional commitment. We are confident that, at the head of Intrant, he will carry out his work in accordance with the country's expectations,” said De los Santos.

Management based on dialogue

The head of Intrant stated that his administration will seek to resolve conflicts through dialogue with the stakeholders involved, rather than taking unilateral action.

“The president appointed me to listen, talk, and make decisions. Decisions cannot be made unilaterally,” Méndez said.

Along those lines, he stated that the institution's doors will remain open to sectors linked to traffic and transportation, with an emphasis on transparency and respect for the rules.

Freight transport, a key part of the economy

During the conversation, the importance of carriers in the movement of goods and in the functioning of the national distribution chain was also highlighted.

Méndez acknowledged the economic contribution of this activity and the role of the drivers, while reiterating that his administration does not intend to "rub or mistreat" those who participate in the sector.

Their approach aims to combine planning, coordination between institutions, and the application of rules to ensure a more organized flow of cargo.

Coordination to improve mobility

The rapprochement between Intrant and Fenatrado opens a space for dialogue on one of the issues that generates the greatest challenges on Dominican roads: the coexistence between heavy transport, vehicular flow and safety conditions.

The parties agreed to maintain communication as a mechanism to address the difficulties of the sector and to guide alternatives that favor safer, more efficient mobility that is in accordance with the legal framework.
