MICHES, EL SEIBO.– Playa Esmeralda is one of the few virgin beaches away from Santo Domingo, with lush nature and good tourist development.
This paradise is located in a little-known corner of the municipality of Miches, province of El Seibo, where one of its main attractions is the arrival of leatherback turtles.
Emerald Beach is an opportunity to develop tourism, since it preserves beautiful natural resources through its turquoise green waters, which are surrounded by wonderful vegetation and coconut groves.
It is part of the coastal system located between the mouth of the Jovero River and the Celedonio Channel, with an extension of almost ten kilometers of beachfront.
This area is projected to be the most important hotel and real estate development in the Miches destination, with 3,500 rooms and 1,600 residential units.
Because the beach is not very well known, the access roads to get there are currently in very bad condition.
The roads are just small, indirect paths to reach that attractive place.
Because of this, the Dominican Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, is working on the organization and development of its access points, consisting of a main entrance from the highway, which will be complemented by two more access points to the East and West, sufficient to link all the infrastructure planned in the area.

The executive director of the El Seibo-Miches Hotel and Tourism Association (Promiches), Gustavo A. Román, explained that on each side, east and west, the establishment of public beach access points is planned to guarantee the enjoyment of the space by locals and visitors who do not wish to stay in the hotels.
He assured that each public access point will have vehicle parking, restrooms, showers, and a craft market to integrate the community's offerings into tourism in an organized manner.
He emphasized that this planning and organization effort is essential for the development of an organized destination, so that the social and environmental risks of tourism development on Esmeralda beach are taken into account.
In addition to offering early solutions to problems, so that mistakes are not repeated that, without timely attention, result in slum development, inadequate management of solid waste, increased crime and "human trafficking" for commercial purposes (sex tourism).
Miches City Hall
The mayor of the municipality said that the multimillion-dollar investment that the government will make has been the best thing that could have happened.
He asserted that the place is one of the most beautiful attractions that Miches has, in the Eastern Region and part of the country.
“Despite being a place with great tourist potential, it lacks parking and access to reach the most stunning area, Emerald Beach. Access is difficult, and this investment will further boost the economy of the municipality and the province,” he stated.
He explained that, according to the Ministry of Tourism's presentation, there will be a corridor where people can have faster access and park their vehicles in a safer place.
“I think it’s excellent that investment in tourism in Miches continues,” he pointed out.
