COE maintains 20 provinces on alert; places four on yellow and 16 on green due to rains

The agency warns of heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds; it recommends caution on the coasts and avoiding crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high water levels

SANTO DOMINGO.– The Emergency Operations Center (COE) placed four provinces on yellow alert and another 16 districts, including the National District, on green alert, due to weather conditions caused by a trough affecting the national territory.

According to the bulletin from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), weather conditions remain dominated by this atmospheric system at different levels of the troposphere, which will favor the occurrence of precipitation during the next few hours.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected during the morning hours, accompanied by gusty winds. Similarly, heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are forecast for the afternoon.

Provinces on yellow alert

The areas placed on yellow alert are San José de Ocoa, Monte Plata, the municipal district of Nisibón, in the province of La Altagracia, and the municipality of Ramón Santana, in San Pedro de Macorís.

Authorities are urging residents of these areas to stay tuned to official bulletins and take necessary precautions against possible flooding and flash floods.

Areas on green alert

Meanwhile, the COE maintains a green alert for Greater Santo Domingo, the National District, San Cristóbal, Dajabón, Sánchez Ramírez, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, La Romana, Samaná, Pedernales, Barahona, Azua, Peravia and San Juan.

Although these locations are at a lower alert level, authorities recommend that the population remain attentive to the evolution of weather conditions and follow the guidance of civil protection agencies.

COE recommends avoiding rivers, streams and ravines

Given the forecast of rainfall, the agency urged the population to refrain from crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high water levels, due to the danger posed by flash floods.

The Operations Center recommended avoiding the use of beaches in the provinces under alert, as a preventive measure against possible increases in water flow and dangerous currents.

In this regard, authorities reiterate the importance of staying informed through official bulletins and avoiding activities that could endanger lives during rainy periods.

Caution on the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts

Regarding maritime conditions, Indomet recommended that operators of fragile, small and medium-sized vessels navigate with caution on the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts.

The institution warned of reduced visibility due to downpours, lightning, gusts of wind, and locally high waves.

For this reason, he urged those engaged in maritime activities to remain attentive to weather conditions and take the necessary precautions to avoid risky situations.

Indomet warns about hot temperatures

Despite the expected rains in different parts of the country, temperatures will remain hot, so Indomet recommended that the population take measures to prevent the effects of the heat.

The main recommendations include drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing, staying in cool, well-ventilated places, and avoiding direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The agency also reminded the public that children, pregnant women, and the elderly are more vulnerable to high temperatures and therefore require special attention during periods of high heat.
