The agency maintains six provinces on green alert due to rainfall that will generate heavy downpours, thunderstorms and gusts of wind
SANTO DOMINGO.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) extended the yellow alert to 12 provinces and the National District on Tuesday, while maintaining six other areas under a green alert, due to the intense rains that will continue to be generated by a trough over different areas of the Dominican Republic.
According to the bulletin from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), weather conditions remain dominated by this atmospheric system at different levels of the troposphere, which will favor precipitation during the next few hours.
Moderate to heavy rain is expected today, accompanied by gusty winds. Heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are also forecast for the afternoon.
Provinces on yellow alert
The areas under yellow alert are Greater Santo Domingo, the National District, Pedernales, Barahona, Bahoruco, Independencia, Azua, Peravia, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, Monte Plata and San Juan.
On green alert
Meanwhile, the localities that remain on green alert are Elías Piña, Dajabón, Sánchez Ramírez, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega and San Pedro de Macorís.
Abnormal waves and flood risks
Regarding maritime conditions, the agency recommends that operators of fragile, small and medium-sized vessels navigate with caution near the coastal perimeter of the Atlantic coast and avoid venturing out to sea due to abnormal swells.
Likewise, it urges caution on the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts due to reduced visibility caused by downpours, electrical discharges, gusts of wind and locally high waves.
On the other hand, weather alerts and warnings remain in place due to the risk of flash floods in urban areas, as well as flooding of rivers, streams and ravines.
Given this situation, authorities recommend that the public stay tuned to updates in weather bulletins and reports and follow the guidance of civil protection agencies.
COE recommends avoiding rivers and spas
Given the expected weather conditions, the COE urged the population to refrain from crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high water levels, due to the risk of flooding.
He also recommended avoiding the use of spas in the provinces under alert and staying attentive to official bulletins and the guidance of civil protection agencies.
Recommendations for dealing with high temperatures
Warm south/southeast winds will keep temperatures hot across much of the country, so weather authorities are urging the public to take precautions to prevent the effects of the heat.
Recommendations include drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing, staying in cool, well-ventilated places, and avoiding direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Indomet also reminds us that children, pregnant women, and the elderly are more vulnerable to high temperatures and therefore require special attention during periods of high heat.
