SANTO DOMINGO.- Starting February 19, appointments were available for the issuance of the new Dominican electronic passport, a document that incorporates biometric technology and higher security standards, the General Directorate of Passports (DGP) reported.
The institution explained that the new format will begin to be issued gradually, while the traditional passport will continue to be valid until its expiration date, so it is not mandatory to renew it immediately if it is still valid.
What is an electronic passport?
The electronic passport, also known as an e-passport, is a travel document that integrates an electronic chip on its cover, which stores the holder's biometric data, such as digital photograph, fingerprints and encrypted signature.
According to the DGP, this format complies with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which strengthens verification mechanisms at airports and reduces the risk of falsification or identity theft.
How much does it cost and how long does it last?
According to official information provided by the Directorate General of Passports:
- The cost for adults is RD$6,700.
- The validity period will be 10 years for adults.
- In the case of minors, the document will be valid for 5 years.
This change aims to standardize the duration of the Dominican passport in accordance with international practices.
Who can apply now?
The DGP indicated that they can begin the process:
- People with expired passports.
- Citizens whose document has been valid for less than six months.
- First-time applicants.
Appointments must be arranged through the official channels enabled by the institution for the collection of biometric data.
Main new features
Among the advantages of the new document are:
- Greater security thanks to the encrypted chip.
- Faster validation in immigration controls.
- Integration into international verification systems.
- Better mechanisms for protecting personal data.
Implementation will be phased in across the country's various offices and, subsequently, in the foreign service.
With the implementation of the electronic passport, the Dominican Republic takes a step towards modernizing its travel documents, aligning itself with the technological standards adopted by most countries.
