Local downpours with thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected in Greater Santo Domingo during the afternoon
SANTO DOMINGO. – The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) reported that a trough will be affecting the national territory during the weekend, causing an increase in rainfall and modification of weather alert levels in at least 15 provinces.
Light to moderate rain is expected during the morning hours in northern and northeastern provinces such as Monte Cristi, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, María Trinidad Sánchez, and Samaná. However, rainfall will intensify in the afternoon, with moderate to heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
The most impacted areas include La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, Greater Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, La Vega, San José de Ocoa and San Juan, all under alert levels due to the risk of urban flooding and overflowing rivers, streams and ravines.
Conditions will remain similar on Saturday. Rain is expected in northeastern provinces starting in the morning, intensifying again across much of the country in the afternoon, including Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Azua, and Bahoruco.
Provinces on alert: yellow and green
According to data published at 11:40 am this Friday the 27th by the Emergency Operations Center (COE), some 17 provinces are under alert levels due to the risk of flash floods, rising rivers, streams and ravines, as well as landslides.
Yellow alert:
Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, Samaná, El Seibo, San Pedro de Macorís, Santo Domingo province, La Altagracia, La Romana and the National District.
In green alert:
María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte, La Vega, Sánchez Ramírez, Hermanas Mirabal, Espaillat, Santiago and Monseñor Nouel.
In addition, the agency urged citizens not to cross rivers, streams or ravines with high water levels, and to avoid using resorts in the provinces under alert.
Forecasts for Greater Santo Domingo
According to the INDOMET climate report, local downpours with thunderstorms and gusts of wind are expected in Greater Santo Domingo during the afternoon, conditions that could be repeated in different parts of the country.
Temperatures will remain slightly cool overnight and into the early morning, especially in mountainous areas and inland valleys, where fog or mist is possible. Lows will range between 19°C and 21°C, while highs will range between 28°C and 31°C.
By Sunday, INDOMET forecasts a gradual decrease in rainfall due to reduced humidity. However, isolated showers with thunderstorms and gusty winds are still possible in the afternoon in provinces such as Monte Plata, Santo Domingo, La Vega, Santiago, San Juan, and Azua.
The report highlights that these conditions will be associated with a weak trough and accelerated northeasterly winds.
