More than 70 volunteers collected over 3,000 pounds of solid waste on Buen Hombre and Los Cocos beaches
SANTO DOMINGO. Industrias San Miguel (ISM) led a cleanup effort on Buen Hombre and Los Cocos beaches in Montecristi, where 3,510 pounds of solid waste were collected as part of the company's efforts to contribute to the conservation of the area's coastal and marine ecosystems.
The activity was carried out within the framework of the International Day of Cleaning Beaches, Rivers, Streams and Ravines, through an alliance between ISM, the Provincial Directorate of Environment of Montecristi, the mayor's office of Villa Vásquez and the Yaque del Norte Water Fund.
The initiative mobilized more than 70 volunteer collaborators from Industrias San Miguel, who carried out collection and sanitation work at different points along the coast.
The event also included the participation of the provincial director of the Environment and representatives of the Yaque del Norte Water Fund, as well as the support of institutions such as the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA), the National Police, the Dominican Navy and Civil Defense.
The collaboration between companies, authorities and civil society organizations made it possible to develop a joint intervention focused on waste reduction and the protection of the natural environment.
Glass and PET plastic among the main waste collected
During the cleanup, 3,510 pounds of solid waste were removed from the coast. Of the total collected, 2,123 pounds were glass, 402 pounds were PET plastic, and 985 pounds were other types of waste.
ISM highlighted that the collection contributes immediately to reducing the presence of materials that can affect marine and coastal ecosystems.
Sustainability and circular economy
Mario Medina, ISM's Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Manager, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the private sector, authorities, and communities to address environmental challenges.
The executive noted that sustainability is one of the pillars of the company's operations and that these types of events aim to both clean up the coasts and raise awareness about shared responsibility in protecting biodiversity.
The cleaning activity is part of a strategy that includes projects related to circular economy, water management, environmental conservation and community well-being.
Actions to reduce plastic use
As part of its environmental programs, Industrias San Miguel reported that it has managed to avoid placing more than 3,500 tons of plastic on the market by optimizing the design of its containers and lids.
The company reported that it is also developing initiatives aimed at promoting proper disposal of PET waste, especially among students.
Among these actions is the “Reciclatón” program, developed together with entities such as NUVI and EcoRed, through which ISM mobilized more than 17,000 students from 17 educational centers during 2025.
Alliances for the conservation of natural resources
The event, held in Montecristi, reflects the role of inter-institutional alliances in the implementation of conservation initiatives and responsible management of solid waste.
For local authorities, coordination between institutions allows for strengthening actions aimed at preserving coastal and marine ecosystems and promoting greater responsibility in waste management.
