SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministry of Public Works and Communications announced this Wednesday that it has activated its Emergency Committee as a preventative measure to safeguard lives, given the impact of Tropical Storm Melissa, which is affecting a large part of the national territory.
"The Ministry of Public Works has deployed equipment including motor graders, backhoes, trucks, front loaders, excavators, water tankers, and rollers, as well as brigades of men and women to be located at strategic and vulnerable points in Greater Santo Domingo and provinces of the country, in order to mitigate the effects that the atmospheric phenomenon may cause, which could increase rainfall in the coming hours according to reports from emergency agencies," says a statement from the entity.
Minister Eduardo Estrella emphasized that the MOPC teams will be active day and night to safeguard lives.
Through the Vice Ministry of Road Maintenance and the Provincial Vice Ministry, brigades have been deployed for preventive cleaning and removal of debris, filter wells and drains in areas that have been identified as being most impacted by the rains.
The Ministry of Public Works reiterates its call to the public to remain attentive to official bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel during Tropical Storm Melissa. It also urges the population to cooperate with authorities, follow the instructions of emergency agencies, and report any hazardous situations in their communities. The priority is to protect the lives of every Dominican and ensure a timely and coordinated response to the effects of this weather event.
