SANTO DOMINGO- The National District Mayor's Office announced yesterday, Friday, that it is ready to celebrate the third edition of Plastics for School Supplies this Saturday, with a large security detail comprised of around 400 uniformed officers to guarantee order and the well-being of attendees.
In its third year, the environmental awareness event will be held at City Hall, instead of the Malecón as in previous years. It will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., as explained at a press conference by Secretary General Elizabeth Mateo; Director of Innovation and Special Projects Yolanda de la Rosa; Director of the Social Cabinet Raudy Vargas; and the city council's liaison with the private sector, Aniana Vásquez.
An enhanced security device
Municipal authorities indicated that security agencies were already coordinated to ensure the smooth running of the event. They explained that the gathering had the support of members of the National Police, National Army, Air Force, Ciutran, Civil Defense, Red Cross, and Daeh.
In addition, the third edition of the event will also feature a mobile hospital, eight ambulances, six fire engines, and a tent for lost children. Furthermore, there will be two mobile units with cameras for monitoring and an aerial surveillance service.
The City Council representatives indicated that the organization has provided restrooms, six hydration stations and tent tunnels to mitigate the sun's rays along much of the route, starting at the entrance of the line on Paul Harris Street, continuing along Horacio Vicioso Street and then along Juan de Dios V. Simó Street.
Malecón will not be part of it
This time, George Washington Avenue (the boardwalk) will not be part of the route for the third edition of Plastics for School Supplies, the executives said.
It is mandatory to participate
Elizabeth Mateo explained at the meeting with the media that to participate it is mandatory to present an identity card indicating that the person resides in the National District.
The exchange
For every thousand small plastic bottles, people will receive a backpack with an electronic tablet and a thermos, with a maximum of two backpacks per ID card.
So far, more than 37 million plastic bottles have been removed from the streets and rivers, thanks to the Plastics for Toys and Plastics for School Supplies initiative.
The third edition of Plastics for School Supplies will be held in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Banco Popular, Propagas, Fundación Propagas, Grupo Ramos, Industrias Bisonó, Constructora Bisonó, Fiducorp, Rica, Susaeta, Industrias San Miguel, Farmacias GBC, Café Santo Domingo, McDonald's, Seaboard and Planeta Azul.
