Money can also be learned: Financial week brings education to classrooms

SANTO DOMINGO – Understanding how money works, saving, and making informed financial decisions is no longer just for adults. More and more educational institutions are integrating this knowledge from an early age in an effort to reduce the disconnect between young people and the financial system.

In this context, the Association of Multiple Banks of the Dominican Republic (ABA) is developing a program that impacts thousands of students during Economic and Financial Week, with activities focused on saving, responsible resource management, and the conscious use of digital tools.

The initiatives include interactive activities and training sessions aimed at children, teenagers, and young adults, with the goal of introducing them to basic concepts such as how banks work, credit, and financial planning. These actions seek to reduce the knowledge gap that persists between the population and formal financial services.

The workshops are held in the auditorium of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD), where students from various schools participate in activities designed for their grade level. Through practical exercises and simple explanations, topics such as saving and economic decision-making are introduced.

In addition to the activities, talks were given to high school students, focusing on their everyday relationship with money. One of the sessions addressed the role of banks in the economy, explaining how loans, interest rates, and financial intermediation between savers and borrowers work.

Another session focused on the use of technological tools applied to personal finance management. In this session, students explored how artificial intelligence can help them plan expenses, set goals, and analyze spending habits, using examples relevant to their own lives.

During the activities, emphasis was also placed on saving as a key practice to achieve short and long-term goals, especially in stages where financial habits begin to form.

The event is part of Economic and Financial Week, an initiative linked to the international financial education program, which in the country brings together dozens of public and private institutions around the economic education of the population.
